What to Expect During Allergy Testing

Overview

Knowing what to expect can make your allergy testing visit smoother. Here is a general outline for skin testing and blood testing.

skin Testing

before

  • Stop oral antihistamines 5–7 days before (your provider will specify)
  • Eat normally; no fasting
  • Wear clothing that allows access to forearms or back

during

  • Small drops of allergen extracts placed on skin
  • Light prick through each drop
  • Wait 15–20 minutes
  • Sites are measured and read

after

  • Mild itching or redness is common
  • Avoid scratching; topical steroid or antihistamine can help if needed

blood Testing

  • Blood draw (one or more tubes)
  • No medication hold required
  • Results typically in a few days to a week
