What to Expect During Allergy Testing

Knowing what to expect can make your allergy testing visit smoother. Here is a general outline for skin testing and blood testing.
skin Testing
before
- Stop oral antihistamines 5–7 days before (your provider will specify)
- Eat normally; no fasting
- Wear clothing that allows access to forearms or back
during
- Small drops of allergen extracts placed on skin
- Light prick through each drop
- Wait 15–20 minutes
- Sites are measured and read
after
- Mild itching or redness is common
- Avoid scratching; topical steroid or antihistamine can help if needed
blood Testing
- Blood draw (one or more tubes)
- No medication hold required
- Results typically in a few days to a week
