Oral Food Challenges
The gold standard for confirming — or ruling out — a food allergy. You eat the food in measured doses under direct allergist supervision, with emergency meds ready if needed.
Overview
Oral food challenges are the gold standard for diagnosing food allergies. They involve supervised, gradual ingestion of a suspected allergen in a medical setting to determine if a patient can safely tolerate it.

- Ruling out food allergy when testing suggests possible tolerance
- Evaluating resolution of food allergy (outgrowing allergy)
management
- Determining if strict avoidance is necessary
- Assessing tolerance to baked forms of allergens
- Evaluating cross-reactivity concerns
safety
setting
- Must be performed in medical facility
- Emergency equipment and medications available
- Trained medical staff present
- Ability to treat anaphylaxis immediately
protocol
- Gradual, incremental dosing
- Observation periods between doses
- Stopping if any symptoms develop

- Anaphylaxis risk (low but present)
- Requires medical supervision
- Cannot be done at home
