At-Home vs In-Office Allergy Testing
At-home kits vs in-office testing — what each can tell you, where they fall short, and when to choose one over the other. Spoiler: in-office is the gold standard.
Overview
In-office allergy testing (skin and/or blood) is performed and interpreted by clinicians and is the standard for diagnosis. At-home kits usually measure IgE in a fingerstick sample; they have limitations.
in Office
- Skin prick testing and/or blood draw in a clinical setting
- Interpretation by an allergist in context of your history
- Ability to discuss results and treatment the same day
- Follow-up testing (e.g., oral challenges) when needed
at Home
- Consumer kits may measure total or specific IgE
- Results may be hard to interpret without a clinical history
- No physical exam or follow-up plan
- Useful for screening in some contexts but not a substitute for a full evaluation
