Allergy Testing Overview
A plain-language guide to allergy testing — what it is, when you need it, and how skin vs blood testing compare. Start here if you're not sure which test is right for you.
Overview
Allergy testing helps identify which substances trigger your symptoms. The main methods are skin prick testing and blood (serum IgE) testing. Results are interpreted with your history to guide treatment.
types
skin Prick
- Small amount of allergen placed on skin, then lightly pricked
- Results in 15–20 minutes
- Most common and often first-line
blood
- Blood draw; IgE antibodies measured in lab
- No medication hold needed
- Useful when skin testing not possible or to complement it
indications
- Suspected allergic rhinitis
- Food allergy evaluation
- Insect sting or drug allergy
- Asthma with suspected allergic triggers
interpretation
Positive results show sensitization; they must be correlated with your history and symptoms to confirm clinical allergy.
